Our
History
Dr.
Cleetes Nealfarst Evans organized Macedonia Baptist Church in 1945.
He lit the torch with a dream and approximately 15 members. Services
were held in a shotgun house located on Booker Avenue. The owners
were Mr. Will and Mrs. Estelle Morris. After a few services,
Macedonia moved to an old two-story white house located on Russell
Avenue. In approximately 1946, a wooden church was built (dimensions
were 25 feet long and 15 feet wide) on Russell Avenue. In 1947 the
torch was passed to Rev. John Wayne Wallace, Sr. Dr. Evans continued
to pastor for thirty more years. He was an evangelist throughout the
U.S. with years of teaching experience. Dr. Evans traveled as a free
lance worker with the nonviolent Civil Rights movement for six
years. He and his daughter, Mrs. Rosetta Evans Griffin wrote three
books: Black Heartbeats, Silver Nuggets and Gems of
Gold.
Rev.
John Wayne Wallace, Sr. lead Macedonia back to the Morris' house on
Booker Ave. After a few months at this location the church moved to
a building on Summit Ave. The owner was having prayer meetings and
prayer bands. Macedonia began to prosper and members of the prayer
meetings and bands began associating with Macedonia. The owner of
the building became dissatisfied and said that the church could no
longer have service there. The church moved to Beckwith Building
located on Booker Ave. Mr. Carson Hezekiah Beckwith allowed
Macedonia to conduct church services there free of rent. Macedonia
purchased property on March 1, 1949 at the corner of Vinton Street.
Rev. John W. Wallace, Sr. left Macedonia in 1950 and presently
continues to preach the gospel. Rev. John W. Wallace was the guest
speaker for Macedonia's third Homecoming Celebration, October 8,
1995. Mrs. Mattie Sanders Feimster, Mr. Frazier Coatney, and Mr.
Dave W. Henderson kept the torch burning with paid guest speakers
from 1950 until 1954. Movement of the torch passed to Rev. R.D.
Lucas in 1954. Under his leadership Macedonia purchased the property
at 1400 Hunter Ave. on July 10, 1954. In 1956, the torch passed to
Rev. James Stroud. Under the leadership of Rev. Stroud, one son
entered the ministry: Rev. Marcus L. Pride. The torch returned to
Rev. R.D. Lucas in 1957.
Rev.
Lester James Wallace received the torch in 1959. Under the direction
of Rev. Wallace, a building fund drive started in 1960. Renovations
of the church included an annex. In February of 1962, the church was
dedicated to the Glory of God. The blessings continued to follow the
Macedonia Church Family.
In
1978, the church purchased property at 1300 Hateras Ave. with the
hopes and prayers of building a new church. In January 1983, the
pastor and members of Macedonia saw their dreams realized with the
ground breaking services of their new church. On August 28, 1983 the
Myersville Lodge #687 P.H.A. conducted Cornerstone Service at
Macedonia. The Mortgage Burning Service for 1300 Hateras Ave. was
held on December 31, 1989.

In
1992, God sent Macedonia a new visionary by the name of Rev. John
Henry Walker, after the passing of Rev. Wallace. Since his
installation as pastor, Macedonia has continued to grow and bear
much fruit.
In
1997, the Lord gave Pastor Walker the vision for a new sanctuary and
Family Life Center. On March 30, 2003, the groundbreaking ceremony
for the new edifice was held and one short year later, on
Resurrection Sunday Morning April 11, 2004, we marched into our
brand new sanctuary! We are very excited, but realize that the
vision has not yet come into full manifestation, therefore we now
have our eyes fixed upon Phase II: A Family Life Center!
God's
favor is truly upon us and we are thankful to Him that when He
gave our pastor the vision for a new edifice, He also gave the
vision for the continuing usage of the two existing buildings.
Therefore, Macedonia Baptist Church is now three buildings strong;
MBC-I: the new edifice at 1300-A Hateras Ave., MBC-II: the former
edifice at 1300-B Hateras Ave. and the Extension Center at 1401
Hateras Ave!
All
praises be unto God for His vision and His
visionaries!
